This photoblog was devoted exclusively to iPhone 1 photos from January 2008 through September 2012, when the phone ceased operation.

I've got an iPhone 7 now, and am tempted to resume using this blog, especially with Google+ planning to cease operations in early 2019.  I'll be test posting here sporadically while making my Google+ replacement plans.  Do not be alarmed.

I made my first visit to Korea this month, and really enjoyed it.

For this first trip, I spent my time focusing on historic buildings. They were enough for my three days there to keep me completely occupied!

I took a few photos in Taipei, Taiwan, during my birthday trip to Asia.

I am still processing what I saw there, which includes futuristic buildings, ancient-looking temples for various belief systems, locally made paper (banana paper! pith paper!), and an interesting combination of influences from other regional cultures, which lends the city a complex physical texture.

“On the eve of the gathering, California governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that would make the state’s electricity supply carbon-free by 2045. A separate executive order by Brown is more sweeping, committing to net zero emissions across the entire California economy, also by 2045.” Hooray, California!

The Washington Post: She made the discovery, but a man got the Nobel. A half-century later, she’s won a $3 million prize.

“The discovery of pulsars ended up being “one of the biggest surprises in the history of astronomy, transforming neutron stars from science fiction to reality in a most dramatic way,” the Breakthrough Prize committee said in a statement Thursday. “Among many later consequences, it led to several powerful tests of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, and to a new understanding of the origin of the heavy elements in the universe.”

The Washington Post: Cold rooms ‘notoriously sexist’? Cynthia Nixon seeks 76-degree setting for Cuomo debate.

I love the hilarious phrase, “thermostat patriarchy,” which is based on a real, factually male-centric standard:

“A month later, a study published in Nature Climate Change, a peer-reviewed journal, revealed a fact women have known for years: Thermostats in offices are based on the assumption that all workers are male, specifically a 40-year-old weighing 154 pounds.” (And wearing a suit, even in summer!)

The Washington Post: Children can be swayed by robot peer pressure, study says

And prior studies show adults are also too trusting: “In follow-up experiments, researchers went so far as to tell the participants that the robot was broken or program it to behave in ways that appeared to be clearly malfunctioning. Most participants still followed it in an emergency. In one trial, they even had the broken robot suggest that people evacuate by entering a dark room blocked by a piece of furniture, with no visible sign of an exit. Most stuck with the robot instead of following the exit signs to leave the way they entered.”

HAL: Dave, we need to discuss this.

The cold snap that went across Europe in late February and early March caught me while in Switzerland on business: it was just 13 degrees Fahrenheit (-10.55 C) one morning when I stepped outside... and not much warmer until it started to snow, when it finally got back up into the 30s.

The boot for my broken right foot wasn't very snow friendly. :) Remind me not to break metatarsals.

'Class-passing': how do you learn the rules of being rich?

Oh, this article!!

“In Atlanta, Baird managed to get a place at one of the better public schools, the one where rich white kids went. At first they told his mom there was no room; there literally wasn’t a spare desk. “So she got on the bus to Home Depot and bought a desk,” Baird remembers. “She dragged it back to the school and said, ‘You can just stick the desk in a corner of one of a classroom and my son will sit there. He’s extremely well behaved.’ And they said ‘OK’.”

Using diplomatic rules, Switzerland’s neutrality, and a bit of paperwork magic, Carl Lutz may have saved more than 60,000 people... but the Swiss didn’t want to publicize it. That’s not bad if they thought they might need to use those same tactics again, but the motivations aren’t clear...
