The Washington Post: Children can be swayed by robot peer pressure, study says

And prior studies show adults are also too trusting: “In follow-up experiments, researchers went so far as to tell the participants that the robot was broken or program it to behave in ways that appeared to be clearly malfunctioning. Most participants still followed it in an emergency. In one trial, they even had the broken robot suggest that people evacuate by entering a dark room blocked by a piece of furniture, with no visible sign of an exit. Most stuck with the robot instead of following the exit signs to leave the way they entered.”

HAL: Dave, we need to discuss this.

Last month I took a brief vacation in Hawaii.

While I was there, I took typical vacation snapshots. Those are here! There are also a few museum photos, which are from the Honolulu Museum of Art.

SFO has a great art collection.

SFO has a great art collection. (Yes, even the AIRPORT in San Francisco has its own museum, plus lots of space for rotating, interesting art exhibits!)

I enjoyed these Isomu Noguchi lamps.

Itchiku Kubota created the most elaborately dyed and stitched kimonos I have ever seen. They are stunningly beautiful, and you could get a magnifying glass and just get lost in them...

(I enjoyed viewing these up close in Toronto at the Textile Museum of Canada.)

I am back from Toronto, and so I learned about their eastern painters, the Group of Seven, who painted very Canadian (mostly eastern) landscapes.

(Emily Carr covered the west - she wasn't in their group, but may be more famous.)

Sightseeing with a broken foot is a bad idea, but my foot was doing well in its big boot, so I did a LITTLE walking around the King's Cross/Saint Pancras area. Luckily, the British Museum is there! It was my first visit, during one of their Friday late nights, and it charmed me.

The cold snap that went across Europe in late February and early March caught me while in Switzerland on business: it was just 13 degrees Fahrenheit (-10.55 C) one morning when I stepped outside... and not much warmer until it started to snow, when it finally got back up into the 30s.

The boot for my broken right foot wasn't very snow friendly. :) Remind me not to break metatarsals.
