Warehouse with history

Interior of Pier 9 main building; Bayside History Walk sign (aging badly); Pilot orange and white boat with Yerba Buena Island and tower of Bay Bridge in the background

A sign and painted pedestrian lane promised me some history, so I entered this warehouse to read some interpretive signs, including a graphic showing ship channels in the bay, and a display about lithophanes, which are 3D models which were previously carved or made of porcelain, but which can now be 3D printed.  Adobe has an office/lab in this building with sophisticated printing tech, so it was their contribution to the interpretive panels.

Triple Glass Arch

These are three views of Mareas, a public artwork by Ana Teresa Fernández.

Around Pier 15

Gate 26; Pier 15 bayside; pattern evoking sand dollars; silt window and its shadow with Bay Bridge in background; broken yellow glass coating

Even without going INSIDE the Exploratorium (an interactive science museum), there is much to see.

Learning about shipbuilding

Autumn foliage at Salesforce Park; two scenes of the Building 12 Warehouse at Potrero Point

I visited Building 12 at Potrero Point yesterday, and learned that the ship building facilities there had an entire floor of that building devoted to scaling up drawings of the steel plates for the ship and making them out of what appeared to be heavy paper, before sending them down to be applied to steel plate and cut.  I'm choosing now to think of ships as just very large items of clothing. :D

Details of blueprints of the ships Charleston and Olympia made at Union Iron Works, San Francisco

In addition to the historic information, there is always a good exhibit with a few works by several artists in the main lobby just north of the red stairwell.  I'm always happy to take a detour to see what is on view.

On the way to Bay Front Park (25 July 2026)

Detail of fish sculpture; industrial port facilities; detail of taller sculpture, sign for Bay View Boat Club

My sunny walk last weekend continued.  It was the first time I've been close to the sculpture called "Steelhead" (detail at top left) by Bryan Tedrick.  It was not my first time in the sculpture called "Louis" (lower right) by DeWitt Godfrey.

Pier 70 Building 12 interior (13 June 2026)

Pier 70 Building 12 Interiors: stairwell, posts, ceiling details

I'm so enamoured of the industrial exterior that I don't usually venture into Building 12, but I had friends I was giving a tour of Potrero Point to, and so we went inside.  There is currently a small-but-high-quality art exhibit of paintings by nearby artists with shipyard/shipping themes.

Echoes sculpture by night

The sculpture "Echoes - A Voice from Uncharted Waters" by Mathias Gmachl looks fabulous at night!

(This installation is part of the Port of San Francisco's Big Art Loop.)

Central East SF Shore - Potrero Point Scenes (22 November 2025)

Five views of industrial steel or brick structures displaying rush and age near Potrero Point

Just hanging out at the historic industrial waterfront district, as photographers tend to do...

Instax Mini from Chase Center to Potrero Point

I went for a walk with my Lomo Instant Square camera, with its Instax Mini back on, and enjoyed the bright sunlight. Perhaps too much (as if).
It was a very pleasant day…

I only returned home when I ran out of film

I need to find a new way to post when I’m excessively enamored of the world visually…

My favorite dry dock

Two images of a steel dry dock: one whole, one detail showing the rusted white inside and dark gray outside with protrusions

I'm just saying: the west-facing wall looks like a contemporary painting, and gives me many painting ideas...

Refreshed Ferry Building Clock Tower (1 Feb)

There are several colors of lights within the tower now, and this is a charming gold set.

Pier Vacancy (21 August)

Such a hip space, in this Port of SF pier building...  The bar here must have closed during the pandemic, and hasn't yet returned or been replaced.  Vacancies are so... new, conceptually.

Moo-saic (sorry)

(Not sorry enough not to make the joke, clearly.)

Crane appreciation wall

Silhouettes of cranes decorate this wall (hidden behind the trees) in a hip tribute to the nearby port.

Double outlet

This wall has been through some stuff!
